Dialysis Services

We offer a complete range of services for your dialysis needs. At the Kidney Institutes, our dialysis nurses, dietitians, social workers, and nephrologists work together to provide the best treatment possible.

Dialysis Basics

Why It’s Needed

Dialysis helps remove excess fluid and waste from the bloodstream, keeping a body in balance when the kidneys can no longer function. It also helps the body regulate safe blood pressure and ensures the appropriate levels of chemicals are present in the body's bloodstream.

Aiding patients who require dialysis services—and making it a comfortable and stress-free treatment—is one of the Kidney Institute's primary goals.

How Dialysis Works

There are two types of dialysis treatments, both of which are available at the Kidney Institute.

Hemodialysis involves a dialysis machine pumping blood out of the body through an artificial kidney membrane.

With peritoneal dialysis, a plastic tube is placed in a patient's abdomen. Then a sterile cleansing fluid, along with the internal lining in the body called the peritoneum, works together to clean the blood.

The Benefits of Dialysis

Although dialysis helps alleviate the symptoms of fatigue and weakness due to kidney failure, the primary benefit of the treatment is extending a person's life.

That's what makes the work we do at the Kidney Institute so important to us. Our physicians and nurses want to make sure you get the best healthcare possible with a comprehensive, therapeutic care plan.

Hemodialysis: Filtering by Machine

Why It’s Needed

When someone discovers they'll require kidney failure treatment, it can be emotionally challenging. However, working with specialists at the Kidney Institute, and meeting others who are also experiencing kidney failure, can help ease a patient's concerns and provide the support they need.

How Hemodialysis Works

Hemodialysis is most often performed at a kidney dialysis center, such as one of the Kidney Institute locations. Treatments are scheduled three times a week, and each session lasts three to four hours.

Our team of nephrologists can also help find a facility at travel destinations for those planning on leaving town.

The Benefits of Hemodialysis

Many kidney failure patients prefer to go to a dialysis center, like one of our Kidney Institute clinics. That's because trained hemodialysis nurses and nephrologists professionally administer their treatment.

Patients can also socialize with fellow dialysis patients and the friendly staff. And hemodialysis, which is required only three times a week, allows for four days of no treatment.

Peritoneal Dialysis: Filtering via Your Abdomen

Why It’s Needed

Peritoneal dialysis is the most common method of home dialysis. When someone discovers they'll require kidney failure treatment, it can be emotionally challenging. However, working with specialists at the Kidney Institute, and meeting others who are also experiencing kidney failure, can help ease a patient's concerns and provide the support they need.

How Peritoneal Dialysis Works

There are two types of peritoneal dialysis.

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is performed four times throughout the day with short, 30-minute exchanges. Patients can manually perform the dialysis exchanges almost anywhere, even while at work.

Automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) can be performed at night by an automated machine while a patient sleeps. When you meet with a kidney doctor at the Kidney Institutes, we will discuss your lifestyle and decide which treatment method will complement your routine.

The Benefits of Peritoneal Dialysis

With peritoneal dialysis, there can be fewer dietary constraints, which allows a patient to maintain a more normal lifestyle. The treatment is also very convenient because supplies can be directly shipped to a patient's home or vacation destination.

Those who choose peritoneal dialysis tend to be more involved in their treatment. At Kidney Institute of the Desert, we provide the training and support for patients who select this as their treatment option.
